Skills with a purpose

Online courses that may support a DofE Skills programme

Selected Innovation Hub courses may provide a structured activity for the Skills section of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), with learning in enterprise, money, communication or digital skills and practical tasks that can demonstrate progress over time.

Suitability must be agreed before starting. The participant should confirm the activity, personal goals, required timescale and suitable Assessor with their DofE Leader. Completing a course alone does not automatically complete the Skills section.

Built for participation

What each course should produce.

Each route is designed around a simple loop: understand an idea, use it, then notice what changed. Progress is about clearer thinking and stronger evidence—not competing for a place on a leaderboard.

Before you choose

Course marketplace questions, answered.

Course pages should make age, outcome and access clear. These are the questions most adults need answered before opening the detail.

Use the Starz route finder
Is the Innovation Hub a replacement for school?

No. It is a parallel layer of practical education designed to sit alongside school, home education or supported provision. Courses focus on applying knowledge through decisions, projects and real-world tasks.

How do I know whether a course suits a young person?

Each published course shows its recommended age, focus and expected outcome. If you want a broader recommendation before choosing, the Starz Academy route finder can suggest a sensible starting point.

How are courses accessed?

Innovation Hub membership includes selected Hub titles as they are released. Super Nova includes STARZ courses plus selected Hub titles. Courses marked “Coming soon” are still being developed and cannot yet be started or purchased. Any separate purchase option will be stated on the relevant course when it is released.

Can a Nu FOCUS course be used for the DofE Skills section?

A course marked “May support DofE Skills” can provide structured learning and practical activities, but it is not an automatic approval or completion guarantee. The participant must agree the activity, goals, timescale and suitable Assessor with their DofE Leader before starting, then take part regularly and provide the required evidence and Assessor’s report.

Can a school or youth organisation use the learning?

Yes. Schools, alternative provision, youth groups and community organisations can explore the separate £199 educator licence and discuss the most suitable delivery route for their setting.
