Our approach

Learning and support in one place

Nu FOCUS combines the tools a learner may need instead of sending families and settings to a different disconnected service for every next step.

  1. 01
    Understand

    Agree the starting point

Clarify strengths, barriers, attendance, intended outcomes and responsibilities.

  2. 02
    Build

    Choose the learning route

Combine enterprise, money, communication, digital media or personal development around the learner.

  3. 03
    Practise

    Use practical projects

Create something real enough to prompt decisions, feedback and reflection.

  4. 04
    Evidence

    Record progress

Keep attendance, outputs, reflection and agreed evidence together for review.

  5. 05
    Progress

    Connect the next step

Move towards reintegration, accreditation, work preparation or another agreed pathway.

From referral to review

From referral to review

  1. 1

    Referral information

The responsible professional supplies enough information to consider fit safely. Nu FOCUS aims to give an initial referral decision within two working days once the required information is available.

  2. 2

    Placement plan

Outcomes, attendance, delivery pattern, safeguarding contacts, reporting, price and review arrangements are agreed before the start.

  3. 3

    Practical learning

The route can use Nu FOCUS tools, projects and experiences while adapting the pace and support to the agreed learner needs.

  4. 4

    Attendance and communication

Attendance and significant concerns are recorded and shared through the agreed procedure rather than left until the end of a block.

  5. 5

    Progress and review

Written progress information supports a formal half-termly review, with the next learning or reintegration step agreed together.

Referral enquiries

Make a referral enquiry

Submitting this form does not reserve capacity or create a placement.

Useful answers

Referral questions

Clear boundaries protect the learner, family, referrer and delivery team.

Who may be suitable for this provision?

The service is designed for learners aged 11–16 in Bedfordshire who may be disengaged, at risk of exclusion, persistently absent, involved in a managed move, experiencing SEMH-related barriers, refusing school or waiting for an EHCP decision. Suitability is considered individually with the responsible school or commissioner.

Can a parent or carer make the first enquiry?

Yes. A parent or carer can ask whether the approach may fit. A placement still needs a responsible school, local-authority or other approved commissioning link so attendance, safeguarding, funding, objectives and review arrangements are clear.

When would Nu FOCUS not be the right service?

It is not an immediate crisis, secure or residential service. It is also not a substitute for emergency mental-health or safeguarding support. Where there is no responsible education or local-authority link, the first step is to establish that route rather than promise a placement.

How are attendance and progress shared?

Attendance, concerns and agreed outputs are recorded under the placement plan. Schools receive written progress information and a formal review is normally held each half term, with earlier contact where a concern or material change needs attention.

Can learning receive formal recognition?

Where a suitable validated unit is agreed before delivery, work may contribute to AQA Unit Award Scheme evidence. Recognition is optional, requires the full evidence standard and is confirmed separately in the placement plan.
