A CV becomes more convincing when it is written for a role, placement, course or opportunity—not “anything available”.

Leave out: age, date of birth, nationality, marital status, photograph and full home address. These are not needed on a UK CV.

Find evidence beyond paid work.

Employers need clues about reliability, communication, initiative and learning. Those clues can come from several parts of a young person’s life.

Projects and courses

Use a school task, Starz mission, Innovation Hub course or personal project. Explain the goal, action and finished result.

Clubs and responsibilities

Sport, youth groups, caring, helping at home and organising activities can demonstrate reliability, teamwork and initiative.

Experience and volunteering

A short placement, event role, community activity or helping a family business can provide strong evidence.

Enterprise and creativity

Selling at a fair, making content, pitching an idea or creating a product can show communication and problem-solving.

Can a young person make a CV without having a job before?

Yes. A first CV can use evidence from school or college projects, Starz activity, volunteering, work experience, clubs, sport, caring responsibilities, hobbies and small business activity. The important part is showing what the young person did and what it demonstrates.

What personal information should be left off a CV?

Do not include age, date of birth, marital status, nationality, a photograph or a full home address. A name, suitable email address, contact telephone number and town or area are normally enough. A parent-managed contact can be used where appropriate.

Does Nu FOCUS receive the information entered into this builder?

No. Nothing entered into the builder is sent to Nu FOCUS or an external contact service. A draft is kept for up to 30 days after the last change only if the user actively selects Remember this draft. Avoid that option on a shared or public device.

How can the finished CV be saved?

The CV can be copied as plain text, downloaded as an editable text file, printed or saved as a PDF for applications.

Should every application use the same CV?

No. Keep a master copy, then change the introduction, skills and examples so they match the role, placement or opportunity. The target-opportunity field in the builder is there to encourage this habit.

Can CV Jump Start receive an AQA Unit Award Scheme certificate?

Only when the activity is explicitly offered against a suitable validated AQA UAS unit and its stated evidence requirements are completed. Creating a CV on this page alone does not automatically result in a certificate or qualification.
