A craft project can help a young person connect creativity with a useful offer. Begin by making one sample and checking how it works, rather than buying materials for a large batch.
“Easy” depends on the learner, tools and materials. Adults should choose suitable activities, supervise tools and check product safety and selling responsibilities before an item reaches a customer.
Ten ideas to prototype
- Paper bookmarks. Test strength, readable decoration and whether the design sits comfortably in a book.
- Greeting cards. Check the finished size against an envelope and include the full material cost.
- Gift tags. Compare two shapes for writing space and efficient use of a sheet.
- Decorative paper bunting. Make a short sample and check how it will be displayed safely under adult guidance.
- Hand-drawn postcards. Use original artwork and an accurate description of size and finish.
- Simple fabric patches. With appropriate supervision, test the technique and explain clearly how the patch is intended to be used.
- Notebook covers. Check fit, durability and whether the cover makes the notebook easier or harder to use.
- Decorative desk labels. Test whether users can read and understand them from a sensible distance.
- Paper storage sleeves. Explore a small sleeve for cards or notes, checking that contents fit without damage.
- Original art prints. Compare the source artwork with a test print and check permission for every element, including fonts and images.
Cost the sample before planning a batch
Record materials, packaging, rejected attempts and making time. A reused material still needs checking for condition and suitability. Do not price only the most obvious component.
Ask what quantity can be completed comfortably and what happens if some items do not sell. A small practice batch keeps the learning manageable.
Treat online selling as a separate decision
An adult should manage eligible accounts, payments, customer data and public communication. Check each platform’s current age policy. Etsy’s minors policy requires adult account ownership and direct supervision for eligible teenage users; it is not an option for under-thirteens.
Use honest photographs and descriptions. Do not copy copyrighted characters, another maker’s designs or music for a promotional video without appropriate rights.
Review function as well as appearance
Ask a familiar tester to use the sample and explain one difficulty. Improve that point before making more. For a fuller production method using suitable reused materials, see our upcycling guide.
